Why Sound is Healing (And how you can heal yourself by singing!)

Hi Reader,

This week, let’s talk more about sound frequencies and why they are healing! Did you know that humans with normal hearing can hear sounds between 20 and 20,000 hertz? Typically lower frequencies below 20-30 hertz are cut on most albums, however, those lower frequencies have been scientifically proven to have huge benefits to the body. They most often help with chronic inflammation and vagus nerve stimulation. The vagus nerve plays a role in various bodily functions, including heart rate, digestion, and inflammation. It's also a key part of the parasympathetic nervous system which allows us to relax and rest.

Fortunately, singing also stimulates the vagus nerve and is a great way to heal yourself! When I was in graduate school, I wrote my thesis about why songwriting is healing, and I discovered numerous research articles supporting this. In fact, the simple act of humming lowers high blood pressure, because it stimulates nitric oxide production in our bodies (the 2nd most healing molecule in our body after oxygen).

Research has also shown that different frequencies affect different parts of the body and the brain. For example, singing bowls can match the frequencies produced by the brain’s alpha waves to promote healing. Additionally, they provide deep relaxation, pain relief, and improvements in digestion. Tuning forks also heal the body as they allow you to resonate at their specific frequencies.

Weekly Newsletter 3.13.25 Why Co-Writing Works So Well! (Trust me, been there, done that!) Hi Reader, For a long time, I wrote all of my songs on my own. When I first started writing as a teenager, it was difficult for me to share my songs with anyone—except for my guitar teacher, who not only taught me how to write songs but was also my biggest cheerleader. My songs were so personal that sharing them felt like revealing a page from my diary. I had to build up the courage to even play them...
