A Lesson Learned in Graduate School (Why do we keep telling the same story?!)

Hi Reader,

How many times have you told the same story in your life?
But more importantly—have you ever thought about why you keep telling it?

I’ll admit, I’ve told some stories more than once (okay, more than a few times!), sometimes even to the same person—who kindly reminds me, “You already told me that!” 😂

I still remember something a professor in graduate school once said that stuck with me:

“We keep telling a story because we haven’t healed from it yet. When we stop telling it, we’ve moved on.”

That was such a powerful insight, and I’ve carried it with me ever since. I think of it often—especially when I’m writing a song and singing it over and over again. My music mentor puts it another way: songwriting can release the emotional charge that an experience has over us. And I’ve found that to be completely true.

If you feel ready to tell your story in a new way—and start to let go of the weight it holds—I’d love to help you turn it into a song.
